Customer Reviews:
Britain at War (WWII)
The World At War was written to accompany the famous WWII TV series, "The World At War". However, this is not the book of the TV series.

This book was first published in 1973. The book gives account of the WWII from Hilter raises to power to the final surrender of the Japanese. Although the book is called "The World At World", it mainly gives the stories about the WWII from the prospective of Britain rather than the world at large. It does not mention much about the Chinese struggles against the Japanese occupation in China which has contributed to the defeat of the Japanese and the Axis' plan to join forces in the Middle East.

However credit must be given to the author for acknowledging the Russian's contribution, even in the mist of the cold war.

Overall, this book provides a good account of what happened in WWII, especially for those who wish to get a quick grasp of the British involvements during WWII.

An excellent WWII book!
Mark Arnold-Foster has made an excellent book. As a student who has just recently studied the Second World War, I belive that this book is a must have. The words in the book are reasonably sized so that you will not get bogged down a huge amount of writing and get board of it. The only downside to The World at War is that I belive that there is not enough information about the eastern front and that it is slightly biased to the British. My example is that there is an entire chapter for the Burma campaign whilst the great battles for Leningrad, Moscow, Stalingrad, Kursk along with the Warsaw uprising is in only one chapter. Despite this I believe that this is an all round excellent book and if you are studying World War II you must have it.

In response to the first review this book was first published in the early 1970s. The information about the enigma and codebreaking was still classified.

An excellent account of the major events in WW II
Mark Arnold-Foster captures all of the major events in world war 2, in an exciting and easy to read style. The book maintains the reader's interest throughout and is an excellent follow up to the old TV series.

The book is split into several different sections, giving detailed descriptions of happenings in various parts of the world - the fall of France, Battle of Britain & Atlantic, Campaign in Italy, Victory in USSR and the struggle for the Pacific. This is followed up by describing the politics of war and death/ resistance in occupied countries.

One of the features that makes the book so interesting is the fact that it includes accounts of individuals involved- such as the first-hand account of the pilot from the American bomber that dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. In the middle of the book there are pictures, helping the reader to gather more vivid thoughts of the situation.

The only criticism that I could give to this book is that it does not gives enough attention to the British and Polish codebreakers - I believe that the work of Alan Turning and his team of cryptographers at Bletchley Park played a major part in bringing victory to the allies.

Overall though, I would thoroughly recommend this book to anyone wanting to increase their knowledge of WW2 in an interesting and exciting way. An excellent buy and an excellent read!

Excellent a must have book for students and history buffs
An updated version of a very good book. Based on the massive and very detailed British TV series the book covers all aspects of the Second World War in great detail without becomming dull or distanced from the horror. The book contains some excellent photos and clear maps of the major campaigns together with clear and well written text. I read the book first when at school and it made me fall in love with military history from which I have made a career. If you are studying the Second World War or just interested this is a must have.
