rediscovering Gerald Durrell

I have recently rediscovered the pleasures of reading Gerald Durrell when I came across these reprints from Summersdale publishing. It has been a wonderful experience revisiting these magical true life stories stories and even more poignant in today's climate. A Man ahead of his time.

Ultimately led to the founding of the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation

Gerald Durrell was a famous environmentalist who added a very human touch to his writings. The title of the book describes his conservation efforts centred in the Mauritian mainland and Round Island.
Durrell visited Mauritius several times and co-ordinated large scale conservation efforts in Mauritius, involving captive breeding programs for native birds and reptiles, ecological recovery of Round Island, training local staff, and setting up local in-situ and ex-situ conservation facilities. This ultimately led to the founding of the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation in 1984.
Durrel's description of the Mauritian traffic when making his way from the airport makes an interesting start to his book. Since I live in Mauritius, it is very appropriate and you can tell from the style that his guy writes from the heart in a blunt no holds barred way.
